RIBA Conservation-Accredited Architect Cost UK 2026
A RIBA Conservation-Accredited Architect (SCA or CA grade) typically costs 15 to 30% more than an equivalent non-accredited architect in 2026, reflecting both demonstrated expertise and constrained supply. For a Grade I or Grade II* case the accreditation premium is effectively non-optional; LPAs routinely return submissions from un-accredited authors at validation.
The three accreditation tiers
- RC , Register member. Entry-level acknowledgement of conservation focus.
- CA , Conservation Architect. Mid-tier; demonstrated competence across a range of conservation works.
- SCA , Specialist Conservation Architect. Top tier; expected for the most significant assets.
When the LPA insists on accreditation
- All Grade I works (effectively).
- Grade II* in most LPAs.
- Grade II within WHS buffer zones (Bath, Edinburgh, Canterbury).
- Cases conditioned in pre-application advice.
Equivalent credentials
IHBC full membership is treated as equivalent in most LPAs. CIfA Member is the archaeology equivalent. RICS Building Conservation Accredited (RICS BCA) is the surveying equivalent.
Where to find one
The RIBA Find a Conservation Architect directory lists every CA and SCA in the UK by region. The IHBC HESPR register lists conservation-led consultancies. Both registers are searchable by region and asset type.
